Opera Santa Barbara - Riders of the Purple Sage

Opera Santa Barbara - Riders of the Purple Sage at The Lobero

Why see Opera Santa Barbara - Riders of the Purple Sage?

A Wild West Opera

Craig Bohlmer's take on the American West brings the adventurous spirit of a classic gunslinging tale into the realm of opera! Conducted by Lyndon Mayer making his Opera Santa Barba mainstage debut, Richard Gammon directs this adaptation of the classic novel by Zane Grey, in a production starring Karin Wolverton, Keith Phares and Luis Alejandro Orozco alongside a stellar supporting cast at the Lobero Theater.

What is the Story?

In Utah canyon country during the days of the Old West, Jane Withersteen has inherited her late father's ranch. With that comes power, and local Mormon leader Elder Tull wants a piece of it. When Jane rejects his advances to take her hand in marriage, the bitter Tull's threats are not to be taken lightly; his own powerful connections make him a powerful enemy indeed. A story as relevant today as ever, with its themes of women's autonomy and the abuse of influence from those at the top of religious institutions.
